We here in Antigua wish you all a very Happy, Healthy and prosperous New Hash Year!

My name is Goldilox, the present Hash Master of Antigua Hash House Harriers and I write to you asking you to assist me in finding out if there would be any interest in your kennels joining us here in Antigua, for a fun filled Hash weekend in April this year to help us celebrate our momentous 500th consecutive running of our Hash.

We are arranging organized accommodation at preferred hotels here in the Caribbean and organized activities spread over an entire weekend from Friday to Sunday for our entire families.

New in town? Looking to explore out-of-the-way, non-tourist places? Know where to meet fun people? The answer is the Hash. No, it’s not the [2] drug . It’s not the food, either. And it’s mostly legal.

You usually first hear about it in whispers. “You Hash?,” someone may ask. “What’s that?” you reply. “Oh nothing. You kinda run some, but not always, and there’s definitely lot’s of beer, maybe even a bit of nudity. But only if you want. It’s really not as bad as it sounds. You should try it. It’s fun. I promise.”

Think of the Hash as kind of a social filter for great friends. It weeds out the straight-laced, responsible people. The left-over misfits are Hashers.

They may be Marines guarding the local embassy, the pilot who just landed your plane, that guy who manages your off-shore bank accounts, the CEO of a haircare company or a recent grad teaching English to locals. They may be expats or locals. Marathoners, teetotalers, pot-bellied couch potatoes, multi-lingual math geniuses, beach bums. They are all Hashers.

The Hash, more formally known as Hash House Harriers (HHH), is a self-professed “Drinking club with a running problem.” Founded before World War II, the Hash has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. This social club meets in cities throughout the world. Most meetings include some form of running or walking and alcohol, often both at the same time. There is always singing and perhaps a little debauchery.

Normally, running is straight-forward. One foot in front of the other and keep going. But this is the Hash. The catch? Nobody knows where the trail leads. It’s also possible nobody knows where the trail begins. And at times nobody even knows where the trail is. Symbols on the ground, generally made with flour, mark the trail for hashers. These symbols are explained at the beginning of the trail, during the chalk talk, given for the Virgins in the crowd.

Flour marks the dead-ends, song checks, beer checks, boob checks, the real trail and false trails. On any given trail, there is a 100% chance someone will get lost at some point. Just make sure you are not that person.

After the run/walk, there’s always the Hash circle. Punishments are assessed for the stupid stuff people do along the trail. These violations could be sex on the trail (no, not REALLY sex, just PDA), technology on trail, shortcutting and numerous other invented violations. The punishment is always the same. Get in the circle. Sing a song. Do a down-down. Repeat. Hares do down-downs, defined as singing a song and then slamming down your beverage of choice in one gulp. Virgins (new hashers) do down-downs. Front Running Bastards (FRBs) do down-downs. Really, everybody does down-downs.

Also, if you become a regular you will be named. Often, it is after you screw up or do something stupid. Most likely, it is not a flattering name. Ankles for Earrings, Passed Out Pumping, Play In My Pants (PIMP), Clitty Litter, Stick It In My Socket and Naughty Man are all Hash names that evoke a certain fear as to what devious behavior earned them these names.

For as off-the-wall as it sounds, most Hashes are well-organized groups. Each Hash is run by a Mis-Management Committee of a General Manager (GM), Religious Adviser (often the most unholy of people), Hare Raiser, Hash Cash, Beermeister and Haberdasher. The Committee organizes each event, everything from who lays the trail and runs the Hash circle, to purchasing beverages or offering merchandise for sale. Most Hashes charge a nominal fee to cover expenses, but you will recoup this in fun and friends in the first five minutes.

Find out about your local Hash ahead of time. Is it family-friendly, pet-friendly, extreme runners only or for walkers too? Each Hash is different. Some are miles of running, with a smidgen of social activity thrown in at the end. Others are social events, with a bit of a walk as an afterthought.

There are Hashes where kids are present, manners are required and drinking is kept to socially acceptable levels. And then there are Hashes where including kids would be a felony, alcohol consumption is beyond belief, and a little nudity is a given. No matter which version you choose, meeting great people is guaranteed.

We gathered on a rather temperamental Saturday afternoon in Pinones. Five hashers and two visiting virgins met at the edge of the sleepy little beach town in the parking lot of Puerta del Mar. M&M, Gringo Fucker, and NFN Mike who brought his virgin sister and her virgin boyfriend too. NFN Pete and Tinkle Tinkle Little Star were the hares on this wild ride, which led them through beach and bar, town and country. They passed locals and chickens, horses and ducks, trying to find their way back to the start.

So off went the hares to the first bar they found, watching the hashers stumble around. Missing the first beer check then doubling back they found the second but the third they lacked. We heard there were shots on the trail, they got the virgins, it never fails. It was a short but sweet trail with a few false leads here and there but all made it to the end, where we named one of the hares.

So after much deliberation and phone call or two we came to a head. NFN Pete he'll known no more but LAZY FUCKER forever more.

Just when you thought you could escape the hash trash for the last hash, NFN Scott pulled through and sent this:

I don't do well with names, but Tinkle Tinkle, NFN Pete I remember. There was a young couple on their second hash, and one other hashette that I can't remember the name of. No stuffed monkey. No Carlos (BIG F*ing surprise there!)

Wasn't expecting a turnout, and had been out of the country up until the night before, so there was no 'pre laid trail'. It got laid as the night went on, like college. Had to carry the first beer stop and ditch it somewhere to build in some time to avoid being caught (like in college...). More experienced hashers would have taken advantage of the humiliation potential. A lucky hare I was. Write like Yoda I do.

That seemingly picturesque beach near Old San Juan is slighly seedier up close. In fact, it's sketchy as hell. Makes the shadiest hasher look like a choir lead. Perfect. Beer check, some scary false trails, then run across the capitol building.

The first bar was closed, so the trail become convoluted and shittier. Amazinly, the pack found the bar, and a angry pack of hashers it was. Beer cooled 'em down. Sang a few songs. There was a vetoed attempt to name Pete. Something to do with his age, or lack thereof. Youngun's overdue.

November 06 was great cummin time for all those who came. Those Hashers who were no shows, always have another Hash to cum for!

The Meeting place was on Calle Laurel, in Punta Las Marias, PR. Some Hashers walked from nearby, some drove from nearby. Needless to say Hashers were in for a treat with Hares NFN Desire and Midnight Masterbater, creating a trail that Hasher may burn as many calories as they took in from their choice of beverage (beer)! The theme of the night...Dirrrty. Longtime member RKelly showed up for this Hash. He brought ancient Hare traditions and helped pass them on to three new Virgins, NFN Mike, NFN Lindsey and NFN Beatriz. Also, NFN Pete has 5 or 6 Hashes under his belt and fittingly made him self unnoticeable.

As the Hares made their trail, the sun was making its set. Once their was no more light, Hashers had to rely on their keen smell of flour and beer. The Hashers made their way from Punta Las Marias toward Ocean Park. From there the Virgins ran into a false trail. NFN Mike (also PHD) notice a flour blop in front of an iron gate, to the Ocean Park Neighborhood which boarders la playa. NFN Mike decides to jump over the iron gate, thinking the false trail was made while the gate was open. Needless to say, NFN Mike thought outside the box with his Virgin ways and had to make a long detour to catch up with the group. As the Hashers hashed on, they found themselves in an intriguing bar (Bolero Night Club) on Calle Loiza, which had one blackened window and "dirty" written all over it.

Once inside, Hashers were just as surprised by what they saw, as the people inside thought of them. NFN Mike claims the bar was really nice and seemed like a legitimate establishment, but yet there may have been some dirty sex going on somewhere inside. Oh yes, there was definitely SEX taking place inside. So, the Hashers bought their beverage of choice, beer, and got back on trail. Only to have another beer check the next block over. A friendly restaurant this was with locals galore. They ordered beer and tequila shots and wait there's more... They hopped back on trail, Calle Loiza it was. An interesting place, dirty, yet refined with barber shops, clothing stores, Venezuelan Food, Greek Food, and Sex on a plate if you choose. "Dirty Trail" The Hashers then made their way off Calle Loiza and found themselves crossing a familiar Express Way 26, on Calle Del Parque. They went by Private Schools and a nice Architecture, but then had to get dirty again on a one way calle sucio, Calle Antonsanti. Once on Calle Antonsanti, Hashers were a little spooked, yet secure in the comfort of staying in a group.

With few lights on the street and more shadows than most, they notice a beer check and searched far and between. They then found the treasure, yet it was not yellow gold, it was Milwaukee's Beast! "On on"... the Hashers said, and continued there way to Avenida Ponce de Leon. As they were on Ponce de Leon, they could smell the finish was near, or was it just more beer. NFN Desire and M & M had been waiting for them for almost a year! The Hashers then came dashing toward La Mercado in La Placita and ran right past each Hare. They had made it, but needed to be taken on a circle tour of the place, being it's rich in food and culture. They leaped and bound and made it to the finish. There were no first or last place, but everyone succeeded and asked "where is the bathroom"?

The circle was made, the beverage of choice (beer) was poured, songs commenced, violations were observed and a Hasher was named. NFN Desire, is to always to be known as "Tinkle Tinkle Little Star".

Artisan Beer Tasting Event - Thursday, 27 August.

As many of you know, I'm starting a food and tour company (http://www.sanjuanfoodtours.com). I've been writing the script this week and I could use your help. This Saturday why don't we do a pub crawl all over OSJ and in between stops at the bars you can share with me your knowledge of OSJ and PR in general and we can do this collective drunken information sharing event that will be videotaped on my Flip Video. I'll also tell you guys my plans with the company and information I've learned about the city, too.

Then next weekend we can have an official hash.We will all start at Plaza de Armas, which is where the tour would start.

The Not-So-Puerto-Rican PRH3 Hash Trash: Mouthful of Marriage Hash, July 10, 2009

Virgins:    Just-Craig(NJ), Just-Billy(RI), Just-Lauren(RI), Just-Jason(RI), Just-Ray(FL), Just-Francisco(FL), Just-Teri(RI), Just-Steve(RI)

With nearly 72 Virgins attending, this not-so-puerto-rican hash would have been perfect for a Thanatophobic Islamic Terrorist... The trail began in a parking lot on Rt.107, opposite runway 08 at the airport in Aguadilla, PR. The pack assembled, shared a few brews, patiently endured the chalk-talk and at promptly 5:39 PM were sent on their way.

Just-Lauren had expressed interest in short cutting and was unceremoniously given the keys to beer truck to take to the beer-check.

The trail cut through the golf course at Ramey Base, headed down hill towards the beaches. Almost immediately, one of the trailing virgins Just-Ray hitched a ride in a golf-cart and advanced to FRB, or was it FCB (front carting bastard)? His lead was quickly lost at the first intersection... Wee-Balls took the high-road which turned out to be the wrong road while some of the virgins, just-bill and just-jason chilled out at the intersection talking politics until the true trail was found and everyone continued downhill.

The next intersection falsely brought the pack out to the beach but the view was nice but there was no beer so WHO cares?

The following intersection circled back to the true-trail and the hares heard a lot of complaints from the pack but WHO cares?

The next intersection was less than 100 yards from the finish (but was hidden by a small hill) however Just-Lauren was parked at the top of the hill in plain sight of the pack... luckily, they're not that bright or observant and missed the obvious shortcut but WHO cares?

The hares took pity on Just-Jason (aka. MyPantiesRInAbunch) and sent him over to tell Just-Lauren to move to the true BC (i think that was the first time I've ever seen him smile?).

The rest of the pack circled, and circled around the maze of cane-fields until coming out to a small wooded area along the beach.

The trail continued north for about a half a mile and when the hares-in-trail caught up to the pack the were only about 100 yards from the end. The pack was huddled around a Toyota Corolla WHO's owner had decided to use to live out his 4x4 fantasies... It was buried up to the frame on an impossibly steep grade - how it even got that far was a complete miracle. The funniest part was the good Samaritan that was trying to help pull him out with his little car, using some shitty little cargo strap that had the tensile strength of kite-string.   Even with the power of 72 Virgins pushing, that little car didn't budge. After Mouthful caught his breath (not from r*nning but from laughing so hard) he walked up to the BC to get his truck to put an end to the comedy. He backed his MitsuBitchy up to the nearly subterranean Toyota, hooked up his tow-cable with nearly 10' of slack in it and told the driver to get ready to accelerate "On Three".   So Mouthful jumped in his truck and yelled, "One ! Two !" and gunned it, yanking that poor little Toyota out of the sand so fast that the (from the video it appears) car got airborne and the driver looked like he got whiplash. (Just-Jason may post the video on facebook or something) The dazed and confused but thankful driver gave Mouthful 5 mangoes for saving his dumbass.

... off to the BC

the BC was at an old Spanish ruin, that used to be part of the PR Railroad that was used in the sugarcane industry, right on the beach with an awesome view.

Unfortunately, the PRH3 regulars missed out on a good chance to sing some silly songs with the RIH3'ers in attendance - favorites like: In Mobile, The good ship Venus, Rhubarb, the S&M man and the Wildwest Show (it was almost like Bondo was there but better, because he wasn't). The virgins stunned and amazed at the lyrical ability of the veteran hashers - well maybe embarrassed is better word for their reaction?

The pack then circled up with the hares, Mouthful and Just-Denny in the center, and the run was rated... there was a lot of complicated math but in the end the trail received a +69.69 for the absence of shoe-ruining-shiggy (apparently somebody guaranteed that?). Visiting hashers next and then the 72 virgins who answered back in song with an unbearable version of Sweet-Caroline...Bah, Bah, Bah !!!

It's Better To Drink Beer After Exercise Than Water

Researchers at Granada University in Spain have come across a discovery that will undoubtedly please athletes and sports enthusiasts - a pint of beer post-workout or match is better at rehydrating the human body than water.

Professor Manuel Garzon, a member of Granada's medical faculty, made the finding after tests on 25 students over several months. Researchers believe that it is the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly.

The subjects in the study were asked to run on a treadmill at temperatures of 104F (40C) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they had reached the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, motor skills, and concentration ability.

Half of the subjects were given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, and the other half were given just water.

Garzon said that the rehydration effection in those who were given beer was "slightly better" than those who were given only water. He also believes that the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

The average person loses around 1 liter (33oz) of water for every hour of exercise in sweat. Rehydrating after a workout is crucial, as a lack of hydration is more likely to make one feel tired, fuzzyheaded, and suffer from headaches.

Based on the results of the study, researchers recommend moderate consumption of beer as a part of athletes' diets. "Moderate consumption" for men is 500ml per day, and for women is 250ml per day.

So that explains why Babe Ruth was so good. His method of training was nearly 100 years ahead of its time.

April 18 proved to be one of the most "intimate" hashes I've ever experienced.

It started off, just as the virgin hares described, in a vacant lot on the west side of Loiza, just across the 187 bridge. An intimate group of hashers gathered, to include Gringo-F*cker, NFN Tere, That's A Mouthful and of course the hares - NFN Sarah and NFN Travis.

Beers were shared, absentee hashers were cursed and then the hares were on their way... The pack watched them set trail going west over the Loiza-River bridge and soon followed. Marks were sparse and the trail was soon lost until a helpful roadside vendor put the pack back on trail... and right into the path of the hares !!! Could this be the shortest hash ever? Did the pack really catch them in the act that quick? NFN Travis just froze, really, he crouched down in plain sight as if we couldn't see him, like some kind of stealthy ninja wearing a white T-shirt. Seriously, I had to really look to see him. NFN Sarah informed the pack that they short-cutted a good portion of the trail and that was enough of an explanation for us to turn around and continue to look for the true trail... and we did, and there was much rejoicing when we stumbled upon the first beer-check, at the site of the old Loiza ferry crossing and thanks to you wanks who didn't show up - there was PLENTY of beer to go around. After my 9th coors-lite it was time to push on. We checked back six marks to the road and back over the bridge where we lost trail AGAIN and ended up at the cars. Mouthful was about to get in his truck and start driving around looking for the end of the trail when Gringo-F*cker called him lazy, and that was all the motivation he needed to go back out and find the trail again, and we did, and there was much rejoicing when we happened upon a rickety old foot-bridge across a canal that brought us into one of the most delightful little sections of Loiza - seriously, now I know where to find some crack and a $20 dollar hooker - just kidding but we did get spend about a half an hour watching two horses have sex. Hooray, more intimacy. What a sad pair these two were, I don't know, maybe they were new to the whole sex thing but they just couldn't connect, if you know what I mean? I felt bad for the poor guy, time after time (I told you we were there for a good half hour) he just kept missing the mark. So, I took away from this that size doesn't matter... Now, growing weary of the sad sex show, the pack was back on trail which quickly led into the town of Loiza, up and down a few streets, a few pincho stops here, a few beer stops there and we were back out on the main road, past the projects and headed towards the beach.

The trail terminated at the Loiza river delta where the hares had been camped out for quite a while waiting for the pack to arrive... they were contemplating calling their coast-guard buddies to search for us in the helicopter but we showed up just in time.

After a few thirst quenching beers and some discussion about the trail, the the pack Triangled up with the hares in the middle. The trail was rated, positive scores for such a dirty, dirty trail, positive scores for getting the pack lost numerous times, positive scores for copious amounts of beer on trail, positive scores for copious amounts of live sex shows on trail, positive scores for NO Ramon, NO Carlos or Carlos' girl fiend (yes I know) and the average score came out to be a +69.

The triangle imploded when the entire pack folded in on itself for down-downs and accusations. First-Bitch-In was Gringo-F*cker, Last-Bitch-In was NFN-Tere and First & Last Bastard In was Mouthful... So we all drank, sang a silly song and again took our rightful places in the triangle.

All that was left to do was name the hares....

The hares were questioned, together and separately, in the usual way to uncover embarassing details about their character.

After much deliberation - it was decided, that from this day forward, NFN Sarah will be known to all hashers as "What's brewin in the Bilge?"
And from this day forward, NFN Travis will be known to all hashers as "Midnight Masturbater." aka. "MnM"

All in all a good hash and a good effort by the virgin hares - shame on you for missing it !

NFN sarah and NFN Travis will Hare this Saturday at the Rio Grande River.

D’errections for APRIL 18 HASH:

The hash will be in the town of “Loiza” ( in San Juan)
For this Saturday's Hash, drive to the bridge in Pinnones and continue going straight on 187 east. From the bridge in Pinnones, you will travel 8 miles to the next bridge, which crosses the Rio Grande. Once over the bridge, park on the right side of the first red light in the vacant lot. The town is called Loiza.
According to the hare, the trail is “a little shady.”

NFN Travis said “I hope no one is afraid of the following: being bitten by a rabid dog or seeing a dog with a huge iguana in his mouth, getting shot by a drug dealer, getting dengue by an infected mosquito, being jumped by a Puerto Rican woodsman, or being thrown in a Puerto Rican jail for trespassing. But please, don't let any of these things deter anyone :)”
